Hausis was really in trouble now. He had lost Askuwheteau’s coke, and now he had handcuffs on the front of his body.

He was still jogging through the fields of barley, although, he was pretty certain the cop from the garage had given up long ago. Hausis didn’t understand why the cop didn’t just arrest him on the spot like a normal officer. Instead he let him get in his car and then held him at gunpoint — what was the point of that? Fuck it. It backfired.

There was a farmhouse in a clearing up ahead. There were really bright spotlights that lit up the perimeter of the house. Hausis kept moving through the farmer’s field. He could hear the animals making guttural sounds in the barn. He started canvassing the outside of the house, looking for a way in. Some of the windows were big enough for him to fit through, if he broke them.

There was a pile of bricks inside a wheelbarrow inside the barn. The only thing holding Hausis back was that the farmer probably had a rifle or a shotgun. At least there was enough of a possibility that it worried Hausis greatly. That weapon was exactly what he was hoping to find though. A pistol would be a lot better, but he might have to improvise to blow the handcuffs off.

With both hands, Hausis bent down and picked up a brick. He scurried underneath what he assumed was the living room window. He’d need to act fast if this was going to work. It was possible the farmer kept the gun, if he had one, in the master bedroom. So right from the start of this, Hausis would be at a huge disadvantage. It was a poor plan. He would get his head blown off instead of the handcuffs.

Hausis ran to the highway. But he couldn’t stay near the road. There was a good chance the police would be looking for him on all the major roads nearby. Considering that, Hausis moved through more farmers’ fields, with the highway within seeing distance. He needed to get to a phone and tell Askuwheteau what happened. Maybe the new gang could help?

Oliver called and told Dave all they found was the backpack with cocaine and a machete. The police were starting to wonder if it had actually been Xavier at the motel, and their informant got the two Indigenous men mixed up. It was a reasonable assumption. The machete matched the modus operandi of Xavier. However, now Eric was in a bind. He couldn’t tell Oliver that it was definitely Hausis, not without compromising his own position in the force.

Eric weighed the options while he ate his breakfast the next morning. He had only slept for a couple of hours, and didn’t foresee himself snoozing anytime soon. There was nothing to do without work or his son around. Bridget was keeping their son for extra time, which Eric wouldn’t have opposed to begin with — his son needed his mother’s care right now.
